But ... I had a massive problem about what to leave out.
One thing that "had" to go was some sort of dual-language book ... either a "proper" one with facing-page French/English, or simply having a French and English version of the same book .. Zazie dans le Metro would be an obvious candidate, as they're both pretty thin ... thinness is important if you've only got 12" . Clochemerle was another possibility, but it's a bit big.
But why ? Well, dictionaries ( and remember, I only had room for a tiny one)
don't tell you everything you need to know. All those idiomatic usages, all those quirky words, obscure words, odd phrases .... that novels are full of. Especially novels like Zazie.
Another reason is a really wild thought !
If you had a dual-language pair ..... and your dictionary got lost or blew way or something ... you could use it to create your own wonderful home-made dictionary ! Crumbs !
Now that's a thought ! Go on, think about it. Ouf ! Cliche ! Fou !!
So ... maybe if I did it again, I would make room for the English version somehow.
If you haven't had a go at selecting your very own French 12" bookshelf, why not have a go ?
And you could send it to me ( [email protected]) and I could admire it and learn from it and even stick it on here. Seriously.
And now, music ... Marina ... "Je suis timide"
Here's mine all set out flat so you can see them ....
