Aujourd'hui j'ai vu un Crave à bec rouge !!
It's the last day of January and Johnny Marr with l'hiver right now .... so here's a couple of things to cheer us all up... firstly, another slice of Agnès Varda .... .. and then this exhilarating set-piece from " Les Demoiselles de Rochefort" about a million years back in 1967 ... cleverly incorporating some music. ... et maintenant ... un fèvrier court et doux !

Crumbs! My favourite German band, Wir sind Helden, have turned some of their songs into French ... and here's one of them ... in German it's called " Soundso" also ...Aurelie !!! ..and here's their French version of "Von hier an Blind" Here's the three songs in their original language .... [1] "Soundso" pronounced Tzo- unt-Tzo .. and here's the 2nd one ... Aurelie .... and ... von Hier an Blind This next one is their most famous song ... the video is remarkable and the song is an absolute beauty, full of wordplay and yearning. Even if you haven't listened to any of the others, watch this !! " Nur ein Wort" CAPITULATION INTERDITE À L'UNIVERSITÉ DE L'AIR MENACE. EN ALSACE, UN EXAMEN POUR EVITER HÉTÉROGENÈS TRUMP TAILLE EMMANUEL MACRON EN PIÈCES CES MANŒVRES RUSSES POUR FAIRE RÉÉLIRE MERKEL LA BELGIQUE VEUX PROLONGER LES EXPLICATIONS L'AVENIR IMPOSSIBLE DE LA TECHNOCRATIE LE PEN ... JE DÉRANGE DES JUGES DE LIGNE There's six fairly odd headlines for you, all from Le Figaro 20/9/17 !! BUT .... they're actually mixed-up chunks of various headlines..... cut up and rearranged to produce " new" startling... or not so startling ... new ones. Of course, I could have made lots of others .... there's a whole world of them in the realms of possibility. But where did the idea come from ? Well, I've been reading André Briton's " Surrealist Manifesto" and he gives some examples of "that sort of thing" in there. So naturally, I had to have a go myself. Of course. And now here's Leïla Huissoud and " On s'connaît depuis longtemps" ... Here's a special "600th Post" puzzle for you .... this is the French version of " The Highway Rat " .... So ...get looking ... what's wrong ? I noticed that on the cover of my English copy of the book years ago ... but a few days ago I saw it in a bookshop window and "they" had put it right. I think that's a shame ... I'm sure that everybody who noticed it for themselves were dead chuffed . I always thought that it was put there deliberately for readers to discover for themselves. This next bit is all based on that book there .... it's an old phrase book.... Mind you, there are older versions.... I wanted to put something silly on here to mark the 600 event horizon .... but I'm not sure whether I've put it on here already. I've long ago lost track of all the stuff that's on here ..... so I'm just going to wing it and do it anyway. I like that book because, like most phrase books, lots of the stuff in it was ridiculous. It's also ancient and therefore full of laughably out-of date phrases as well. Mind you, I've got some much odder German ones.... but that's another story.... However, surprisingly, it does have a lot of the phrases you might want use on that hot date with the girl/boy/whatever of your dreams ... swot up on these well in advance folks ... remember, all of these were in the book.... believe me! But not necessarily in this order............. Faites-moi voir des pyjamas en soie Show me some silk pyjamas Pouvez-vous le faire tout de suite ? Cannot you do it at once ? Combien de temps cela prendra-t-il? How long will it take to do it ? Comment voudriez-vous le prendre ? How would you like to have it ? Veuillez ne dure que "oui" ou "non." Please say only yes or no. Peut-on étendre la durée ? Can it be extended ? Allons ! Qu'avez-vous? Come now ! What's the matter ? Elle est trop étroite. It's too tight. Comment cela va-t-il? How is it going? Elle n'est pas assez longue . It's not long enough. Les coussinets demandent à être serrès. The balls require screwing up. Ils sont trop petits. They are too small. Pouvez-vous me prêter un tournevis ? Can you lend me a screwdriver? I'm sure I could have continued that for some time ..... Maybe I will. But now, my current favourite French song ..... Indochine .. Le Baiser .... very appropriate in view of that phrase-book stuff ... Last time I recommended Indochine's CD "Paradize" as an essential listen. Plus, I included videos of some of the best songs on there. But there's more good stuff, and here it comes ... first up .. Mao Boy .... ... and this is a lovely, intimate version of Comateen 1 ... and here's the only version of "Dark" I could find .. ..and the last of my picks is "Le Manoir" ... very grand .. Plus, as an extra bonus, here's the whole CD all on one video, track by track .... that way you can decide which bits you like best. I think I've only recommended two CDs so far .... and that was ages and ages ago. [150] Des visages des figures [182] Dolly So here I am with another one.... Indochine's "Paradize" That's the back cover up there. So ...to justify my choice, here's a run-through of some of the best songs on it. Mind you, my idea as to which are the best might not please everybody ... .... Le Grand Secret .... Electrastar Un singe en hiver ... J'ai demandé à la lune ... with Cœur de Pirate on't piano .. La Nuit des Fées .. There's more to come ... I'll put them on the next post .....
I've been searching around for more of those short films by Agnes Varda ... but they're not all as jolly as "Le Lion Volatil ".... and some of them are beset with those l....o.........n.. ......................... g silences that us learners of French can't be doing with. Anyhow, here's a chunk of " La Point Courte" in which they do do some talking.... .. and here's the start of "Cléo de 5 à 7" ... and here's another short scene from the same film, set around a piano ... She certainly likes songs in her films .... there's even a tiny bit of song in this clip from Jane B. Here's a final clip from " Le bonheur" ... I like the two signs at the end ... très subtil !! So ...you had your music, you've had your films ... you're sorted.
As you all know, I'm very interested in book titles.... for a variety of reasons. But here's a new angle .... what about this .... I mean, what the hell is that all about ? It's not only weird and horrible, but the purchaser can have no idea at all as to what the devil it's going to be about. It's simply a "Crap Title" ..... but there's more ... and crappier .... Well !! What a bloody awful title .... and what's more, it's a crap cover as well. What on earth were the publishers thinking of ? Who is it going to appeal to ? Feel free to look up " cloaques" if you wish. It's a word straight from the Latin "cloaca" Which is not a good thing at all. BUT .... there's even worse to come ..... what on earth is this ...... seriously ... It's hardly believable really. Anyway .... here's my challenge to the massed hordes of you out there. I challenge you to find some more Truly Crap French Book titles. And ... if possible .... The Utterly Crappiest French Book Title Ever. Go on ... you know it's got to be a hell of a lot of fun. But maybe not a good homework for the kiddiwinks. And then you can send them to me. email ..... [email protected] or ..as a comment and then ... I can put them on here. RESULT ! But now we will avert our eyes from those things up there and move into the sphere of sweet music which sootheth the thoul...... well, it'll cheer you up at least after all those microbes and cloaques ..... plus, it's one of the clearest words videos you'll ever see .... You wouldn't expect Iggy Pop to be singing in French .. well, it was a surprise to me anyway.... but here he is singing, of all things, "La vie en Rose " .... take it away, Iggy ... ...and in startling contrast to that ..... this .... .. and with this handy words video, you too can learn the song, and make your own version ...and why not ? ...you'll be surprised to hear that young Iggy has made a CD with lots of French songs on it ..oh yes ... Whether or not this has 'owt to do with it I know not ...
About a week ago (#584) I showed you some of Georges Perec's amazing lists from his jumbo-sized tome " La Vie mode d'emploi" .... and I promised you I would show you some of the much subtler lists ... embedded almost invisibly within the text itself. They're all over the place, and these few are only a small collection ...... here's a honking great list all about puzzles.... he's very very fond of puzzles ..... I must apologise for the crap photography .. the book is so thick and unwieldy it's hard to get it to lie flat without 27 muscular assistants .... and many of the lists ... like that one up there...go on and on beyond the scope of a dinky camera like mine. right .. on to the next one ..brace yourselves ... it's two lists really .. The next one is devoted to "ports" .... it's crammed with plenty of adjectives, if you like that sort of thing ..some of them are a bit obscure . It goes on well beyond this little passage right over to the next page ... he's a right one, this Perec ... .. moving on .... I trust you're all paying attention here ... there's more ports for you coming up .. ... phosphate de.... quoi ? .. I bet you're wondering. I suspect you're all a bit knackered now ... after all, no doubt you've been filling your notebook with new vocabulary, complete with some illustrative sentences and the like. You know it's Terrific For Your French. So ..for now I'll leave the 8347 other lists for a later post. Meanwhile, here's Salomé Leclerc ..... "Caméléon" Si on partait ensemble
