There are various ways to type accented letters..... and I've written about them in previous posts. I always use the 4-digit ALT codes with my current PC ..here's a sort of compilation of what I've written in the past..... for PC and after that, the Mac ...
How do you get French accents on your normal PC keyboard ?
Well, you could go into settings and get the French keyboard ..... but that can be a bit of a pain.
Mostly I tend to use ALT codes... these are numbers ( from the number pad on the rhs of the keyboard, not the ones along the top) which you type while holding down the ALT key ... which is to the left of the spacebar.You will need to have the number lock on.
On most PCs it's the 4-digit ALT codes you need ... I've put the code for lower-case first then/upper-case code. .....here we go .....
é = alt 0233/0201 è = alt 0232/0200 ê = alt 0234/0202 ë = alt0235/0203
à = alt 0224/0192 â = alt 0226/0194
î = alt 0238/0206 ï = 0239/0207
ó = alt 0243/0211
û = alt 0251/0219 ü = alt 0252/0220
ç = alt 0231/ 0199
There are loads of other symbols you can get in this way..... it's fun to explore, or you can cheat and get the whole lot from the net. For example, œ is alt 0156 , and alt 0133 is … ( three dots)
Here they all are ... you could just copy and paste this row of characters onto any document you are writing and copy/paste the ones you need as you go along...
éÉèÈêÊëËàÀâ î Î ï Ï óÓûÛüÜçÇ
[ Some PCs, though none that I've ever tried, use 3-digit ALT codes instead ... you can easily find them on the net, and they operate in the same way as the 4-digit ones that I use ]
Here's how you can do your accents on a mac if you need to .....
First you'll need to know where your "Option" or "ALT" key is ..... it's the key to the right of the CTRL key usually.
é .... press ALT and e simultaneously, ...release... then e ....... é
è .....press ALT and ' simultaneously... release ... then e ..... è
à .....press ALT and ' simultaneously....release ...... then a ...... à
ù.....press ALT and ' together .........release .....then u ... ù
ä ....press ALT + u tog .......release .... then a .........ä
ï ...............ALT + u tog ... release ....press i ...... ï
ü ..............ALT+u tog ...release .... press u .......ü
ë .............. ALT+ u tog ... release ...press e .......ë
ö ..............ALT + u tog ...release ....press o .......ö
î ............... ALT + i tog... release ... press i .......î
ê .............. ALT + i tog ... release ... press e.......ê
ô ...............ALT + i tog ...release ....press o ...... ô
â .............. ALT + i tog ... release ....press a ......â
û ...............ALT + i tog ...release ....press u.......û
ç .............. ALT + c tog... release ... ç
œ .............ALT + q tog ....release ... œ
æ .............ALT + ' ( the key at the bottom left) ..release ... æ
ÿ ..............ALT + u ... release ... type y
Using the ALT key in this way you can play around and find all sorts of symbols ....
π ß ∂ † ∑ ≈ ∫ µ ø ¶ ¢ ≠ ........ go on , have a go !
If there are any errors here I'd like to know so I can put them right ... at the moment I haven't got access to a mac to check the ones I've not used for a while.
Well, I hope you found that useful .... but now here's Dolly again with the loud/quiet song " I Love Your Hands" ... I chose this one because the same thing has happened here ''' the accented letters are missing in the words below ...... but now you can copy and paste those words and put them in yourself ... that's progress for you...
A nouveau
Est il besoin de cent souvenirs qui se
Lacent sur la peau
Jaime autant que tu laisses tes mains
Dcouvrir un autre chemin
Plus que les mots ne disent
I love your hands
I love your hands
Est il besoin de tout se dire pour se parler
A nouveau
Est il besoin de cent souvenirs qui se
Lacent sur la peau
Combien e temps nous reste il a se
Comprendre a demi
On dirait que les annes filent a sen
Lasser encore
