[1] .... bin's /binoclard/binette [2] .. bath/ bateau/bâton
But now, a song which sounds remarkably like " My Sharona" ... and you, dear readers, can sing along with it, because it's a words video ...
Way away in the distant past ( ok, post 732 actually) I showed you some smashing slangy French words from my newly-acquired Dictionnaire Bilingue de l'argot d'aujoud'hui ! I "did" the best of the "a"s and a "b" or two ....now, here's more of the "b"s ... some of them have more than one juicy one .. OK ...en route pour la joie ....... [1] .... bin's /binoclard/binette [2] .. bath/ bateau/bâton [3] BCBG , beau comme un camion !.. [4] bernique !, berzingue »»»»»»........ [5] bidet, bidon(1), bidon [2] , bifton/biffeton,bigler, bigleux .... [6] bon, bonbon ...... [7] botter, boucan, bouché ... [8] bords, borduré, borne, bosse, bouché, boucher, bouchon.( !) [9] bouffer ( multiple uses),bougrement, bougresse, boui-boui, bouif .... Bondieu !! Quel assemblage des immondices ! But now, a song which sounds remarkably like " My Sharona" ... and you, dear readers, can sing along with it, because it's a words video ...

For a start, I very much wanted to know how to say it ! Luckily, this bloke is going to show us. And lots of other things about it. Look at this terrific record sleeve from way way back in 1961 .... It features 4 Top Tracks by Les Pirates .. avec Dany Logan. Coo ! And it's not just the sleeve ... there was indeed a record inside it as well. It was priced at 50p ... but I generously paid a quid for it. Here's the back of it .... plenty of French there .... gripping stuff indeed ! The sleeve notes seem a bit odd at times .... I looked them up when I got home ... I didn't expect to find much, but I was wrong ... they rumbled on as a group well into the '80's ... and there's quite a few videos of them " in action" ..... here's a "Festival of French Pop" 4 U ! Very "Tommy Steele " this next one... I'm showing my age there ... and you get a post-song mini-interview .... This one ... "Comme un fou" is on MY record !! It's nicked the tune from Elvis Presley's " Blue Suede Shoes" ... This one's Summertime Blues ... Eddie Cochran ! Here's Dany Logan all on his own ... a bit less " rock-and-roll" Of course, you, dear readers, will be busy working out all the "paroles" and writing them feverishly in your notebooks for future reference.
We all know that dual-language (DL) books are " a good thing". They're a good thing when you're reading in public .. you don't look a complete halfwit because you don't need to keep looking words up ... yes ! And they're good for finding the meanings of various expressions and ways of saying things that you just can't find in any of your 7357 dictionaries. I've got quite a few of these DL books, of various degrees of wonderfulness and in various languages ... Spanish-English, French-English, German-English,, but surprise surprise NO Welsh-English ones. Bah ! "They", despite what the Welsh government says, do NOT want us English to learn "their" language. Oh no !. But I've learned it without their "help" .... So There ! Here's my rather diverse collection of the French-English ones ..well , the ones I've managed to find anyway... they're an odd lot..... First up, an ordinary one .. I have to say, compared to the German ones I've got in the same series, there's very little humour to be seen. I'm sure I've got more than just #1 in the series, but It's hiding somewhere. In fact, I'm not at all sure what the French sense of humour is. Unless it's all of the Petit Nicolas variety which is fine, but limited in scope ! I liked " Le Tigre Mondain" best. Here's two more .. the left one is OK, but some the stories are rather old and plodding . That one on the right is actually a dual-language poetry book by that there Apollinaire. He's OK. Here's another .... another Penguin, and another poetry book. Pretty good this one, well-presented and lots of variety. I notice that this is #4 .... I've not got any of the others... I suspect from the subtitle " Twentieth Century" that the previous 3 are ancient old crap ! Here's an excellent French-English version of Alice Through the Looking-Glass plus "The Hunting of the Snark" which I've enjoyed reading .... and next to it a real oddity ... a French-Spanish Dictionary.... and it planted an idea in my mind which I will be dealing with shortly ... Finally, unless I find some more that must be hiding somewhere, this extremely unlikely book " relations" .... plus another photo of Alice which I've inadvertently added to it.... "Relations" is a collection of Serbian poems (!) which have been translated into French and English and made into a book ... and oddly, they've been separated, with the French versions at the Front and the English versions at the back ! I'm sure they thought it was a good idea at the time. As I mentioned earlier, I have another idea about " all that" ..... but it might come to nowt. Meanwhile, here's "the" "music." I don't think he's reading a DL book .....
Ca me va Je pars avec toi ! Mais elle est faite Ma valise Je suis prête On part à Venise Mais elle est faite Ma valise Y’a les cintres Plus les chemises J’aurais dû y penser avant Laisse-moi, laisse-moi, laisse-moi partir devant J’aurais dû y penser avant Laisse-moi, laisse-moi, laisse-moi partir devant Yes, 'tis that time again, and another ace French song to learn, or if you prefer, you can just listen to it. I can't find a "words video" to go with it, so I've put the "paroles" underneath. The good news is, it is short .... and sweet. And it's on here ........ There it is ! 688 pages of French to English, English-to French slang ! Plus ... it only cost me £1 It is by far the rudest collection of French slang I've come across. ( No pun intended there folks.) Let's have a look at a few good'uns ..... just sticking to the "a" section and v. few of these are at all rude [1] afanaf + ado .... [2] acompte .... acier [3] accrochez les wagons ! + accus [ 4 ] attention les yeux ! + attifé [5] I'm sticking in two "b" ones .... bénard + belle-doche plus the mysterious Ben-Hur ... more about him next time ... Now, a smashing spot of sonorousness .... L'hiver ( it's on the way, by the way) L'hiver se passe A la lueur des bougies
Last time I wrote about the distressing lack of an index in " The Dictionary of Modern Colloquial French. The "Dictionary of Modern Colloquial French" does not have a "reverse index" which would direct you to all the French slangy words for " idiot" or "swindler" or "excrement" or "sexual intercourse." But it should have. I've even made a few makeshift and rather limited lists for myself, but only covering a few topics .... I'll dig them out and put it on here when I've found them. Or rather, both of them ... I've got two copies ... mainly because j'suis un abruti, et un ballot, un œuf, et un zozo ! And yes, all 4 of those all masculine nouns. So now I've found a few, scribbled in the back pages of the two copies. And here's another thing ...all books, but especially language books, should have a good few blank pages at the back for just this sort of thing .... just a passing thought . Here's some of the huge number of slang words for "body parts.!! And this is only some of the b's and c's ! ..and here's various slang words for different sorts of people ... ...and here's some words for "mistakes" ... including " disasters" and " cock-ups" ..I haven't got very far with them ... it was probably "un waterloo" even to try ! ..and here's the one you've all been waiting for ... SEX !! .. this is mostly some of the "b's" ... just imagine how many there must be in the entire book ! So ..there's a project for you. Mind you, you can probably just look it all up on the net these days. So much for finding them for yourselves, investigating, experiencing the thrill of a serendipitous new discovery and all that sort of old-fashioned guff. Bah ! Let's look up the French for " Mind you" on't net. Sure enough, there it is ! .. (= but) remarquez, .. They pay full rates. Mind you, they can afford it. Ils paient plein tarif. Remarquez, ils peuvent se le permettre. I got substantial damages. It took two years, mind you. J’ai obtenu des dommages intérêts substantiels. Cela m’a pris deux ans remarquez. Too easy !! ..but now, away with all this wittering ..... music awaits ... My many and various dictionaries tell me all sorts of things under "bobo" ...but here's the lowdown about it .... .....and here's a song especially about "bobos" .... This one's very, er, interesting .... While I was " researching" the word "bobo" I realised for the first time that "The Complete Merde" does not have an index for all those interesting/rude/peculiar/obscure words it contains. It does have "themed chapters" but having an index would be more useful.
And it should have. More seriously,, the "Dictionary of Modern Colloquial French" does not have a "reverse index" which would direct you to all the French words for " idiot" or "swindler" or "excrement" or "sexual intercourse." But it should have. I've even made a makeshift and rather limited one for myself ... but it only covers a few topics .... I'll dig it out and put it on here when I've found it. Or rather, them ... I've got two copies ... mainly because I'm un abruti, et un ballot, un œuf, et un zozo ! And yes, they're all masculine. |
